No threat to Hawaii as Tropical Storm Keli forms; Hurricane Iona strengthens south of isles



Tropical Depression Two-C has become Tropical Storm Keli, according to the Central Pacific Hurricane Center.
Keli was located about 1,090 miles southeast of Honolulu, packing maximum sustained winds of 40 mph.

At 11 a.m. today, Keli was moving toward the west near 10 mph and expected to move in a general westward motion over the next few days.
Maximum sustained winds are near 40 mph with higher gusts. Some strengthening is possible during the next day or so, but is expected to weaken around the middle of next week.
Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 35 miles from the center.
Meanwhile, Hurricane Iona was expected to strengthen as it moves westward.
Iona was located about 870 miles south-southeast of Honolulu with maximum sustained winds of 75 mph. Iona was moving toward the west near 10 mph and expected to increase in forward speed over the next couple of days.
Iona’s maximum sustained winds are near 75 mph with higher gusts and expected to strengthen in the next day or two then gradually weaken around midweek.
“Confidence remains high that Iona will stay well south of the Hawaiian Islands,” forecasters report.
Hurricane-force winds extend outward up to 15 miles from the center, while tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 70 miles from the center.
There are no other coastal watches or warnings in effect.
