UPDATE: Firefighters get one wildfire in Hāmākua under control only to battle another a day later
A blaze Aug. 7 near mile marker 37 burned about 150 acres of pastureland and approached Highway 19 near Paʻauilo before being brought under control by about 5:30 p.m. that day; another wildfire the afternoon of Aug. 8 in the same area caused Hawai‘i Fire Department to issue a wildfire warning.
Lighting upgrades underway at Kamehameha Park tennis courts
Project started Aug. 4 at Kapa‘au park and involves removing old, non-functioning lights and installing new lighting and electrical infrastructure. Work scheduled to take about 60 days.
Public input sought on new statewide ‘Green Fee’; Care for ʻĀina Now encourages survey participation
Coalition of scientists, policymakers, conservation practitioners, educators, students and community members recently launched the survey, which will be a resource for the coalition’s leadership as it shapes recommendations for funding implementation.

A team led by U.S. Geological Survey geophysicist and oceanographer Ashton Flinders with Hawaiian Volcano Observatory discovered the underwater landslide that spans more than 10 miles across and could have played a role in the 1957 tsunami that struck Hawaiʻi and elsewhere in the Pacific region.
High surf advisory in effect this weekend for south-facing shores of Big Island
Large breaking waves of 7 to 10 feet are forecast by Aug. 8 along the southern shores of the island, with wave heights increasing to between at least 10 and 14 feet by Aug. 9.
UPDATE: Coastal flooding now likely through late Sunday night along Big Island shorelines
The extension comes as National Weather Service forecasters also issued a high surf advisory for south-facing shores of the state that will be in effect from early Friday morning to early the morning of Aug. 11.
Waters at Māhukona Landing in North Hawai‘i being retested after high level of bacteria discovered
Hawai‘i Department of Health issued a high bacteria notification for the area after higher than normal bacteria level of 178 per 100 mL was found during recent routine monitoring. There is no known source of fecal contamination.

High Surf Advisory for south shores; Coastal Flood Statement for all Hawaiian Islands
A large south swell will gradually fill in on Friday and peak on Saturday near warning thresholds, according to the National Weather Service. Peak afternoon high tides, combined with elevated water levels running about a half a foot higher than predicted and a large south swell filling in, will lead to minor flooding along shoreline and low-lying coastal areas through Saturday. Water levels should fall below thresholds during peak afternoon high tides Sunday.
